Step 1: Pre-Purchase Stage

1. Find out how much you currently spend on food:
Keep grocery store receipts
Find out total amount of money spent on food in one week. Multiply this number by four to get monthly food costs

2. Know your budget
How much money do you have available to spend on food per month?

3. Keep a list of low cost, nutritious and tasty recipes:

4. Make a menu plan for the week
Plan ahead and grocery shop once a week

5. Check what is at home
You do not want to buy ingredients you already have

7. Review store flyers and coupons
This is a great place to find bargains and deals
Be careful! It is only a bargain if it is for something you need. Do not buy extra items.

8. Don’t shop hungry!
You are more likely to buy unnecessary food when you are hungry

Step 2: Purchase Stage

1. Time is money
Be efficient. Only buy necessary items.

2. Stick to your list

3. Try generic and store brands
The quality is usually similar and the price is cheaper.

4. Avoid fast food
Buy Bulk

5. Check expiration dates

6. Buy food in bulk
Only non-perishables that you will use over time.

7. Shop the store perimeter
Fresh foods are found on the perimeter
Explore all levels of store shelves

8. Ignore items near cashier

Step 3: Post-Purchase Stage

Receipts
1. Prevent waste

2. Keep track of food purchases
Save your receipts. Add up food costs.
Make sure you are meeting your budget goal
